Welcome to Squanderlust, the podcast about the emotional side of money, why our actions aren't always as good as our intentions and what we can do about it. I'm your host, Martha Lawton. And today, this is a really rough and ready quick episode I'm recording at home. There's no editing. I'm going to apologise right now this is not going to be Wardour Studios level sound quality. But I wanted to drop in, put a little episode in before we go back to our regular scheduled awesome interviews with amazing guests to thank you all for making 2021 as good as it could have been under the circumstances. Everybody who listened, rated, reviewed, shared an episode with a friend, got in touch, thank you so, so much! It really means the world to us.

I wanted to do a quick roundup of the year. It was a year of big changes, we had to find a new way of doing the show without Alex. And it became really clear after I made a horribly embarrassing failed first attempt at trying to record a solo episode, that will never be aired, (it's so cringy) that we were going to need to get guests in to have that conversation, have that energy and keep the Squanderlust, kind of, vibe that we liked so much. And we were so lucky. We had some wonderful people willing to come on the show with us and I want to just do a quick roundup of a few of my favourites from the year. These are just personal choices. Everybody was great. But just a few that really, kind of, chimed for me.

First one was the wonderful Patrick Hill, who took the dark, difficult topic of recovering from losing a job and just filled it full of light and humour. For those who haven't listened Patrick is like a Zen master with a hot boyfriend and a Kylie Minogue obsession. I love him. He was great. And then we also had Nick Elston, who is just this warm, fun, friendly guy. He gave us loads of really practical solid advice on managing money anxiety, and I just had a great time talking with him. And speaking of having a great time, Dr. Grace Lordan was funny, and charismatic and knowledgeable and just... just we had a hoot recording that episode and she said she's going to come back on the show, and I am absolutely holding her to that because the episode we did on applying behavioural science to progressing your career is just a banger, frankly. I was super excited to get Otegha, Uwagba to come on the show. Her book, "We Need to Talk About Money", which is all about money in society and how it intersects with race, gender, class, and how secrecy around money exacerbates inequalities and causes unnecessary shame and difficulty. That was just a really good conversation and her book is really fantastic. Highly recommend you go check that out. So I loved talking to her. And then Will Rainey who was one of our, kind of, year end episodes, talking about how to teach children about money. Will's, such a lovely guy. He's just he's really lovely. And his book is is just full of... It's just a great story for kids. And the episode we did together was was full of really great, solid, easy to put in place advice for parents, which frankly, yeah, as parents... parents need that, you know, simple, practical suggestions, you can just do. Love it. In a world full of complicated advice that doesn't work for parents. I'm not a parent, but I hear this all the time from them. And, you know, if we can contribute by giving you something simple, you can actually do, I'm very happy to have been able to do that.

So that kind of brings us almost up to date. All our other lovely guests, thank you as well. And I'm only highlighting just a few. But I could sit and talk all day about how great all of our guests were throughout the whole of 2021. But I want to get back to you guys the listeners and just flag up a couple of older episodes. If you are experiencing the January post Christmas financial blues. A lot of people do I want to flag out a really old episode, our Resolution Fail episode where we talked right at the beginning of the show when we first started recording about why New Year's resolutions are, not great and we preferred goals and challenges. And also our episode 23, which is Debt Advice Avoidance, which is about why people put off getting advice around their debts and why that is a really bad idea. And also, what happens if you go for debt advice, and where you can find it in the UK. There is no reason to struggle on a loan with debts. Please don't. Please seek help. Advisers can make a real difference if you actually just go and talk to one.

Another quick couple of things I want to flag up. And one is that we have a new partnership, which I'm super excited about. We are working with TaxScouts. So our freelancers are self employed people, those of you who've got self assessment forms that have to be in by the end of this month and payments you're gonna have to make, you might be feeling a little bit stressed about that. If you go to taxscouts.com/squanderlust, you'll be supporting the show. But more importantly, you'll get 10% off a prepared self assessment tax return done for you by a qualified accountant. For a simple low fixed fee. 10% off at taxscouts.com/squanderlust. It's a great deal, reduce your stress, make sure you're paying the right amount. I use them myself. And they saved me a bunch of money last year. So I was thrilled.

The other thing I want to say is I actually have some money coaching slots open at the moment. So if 2022 is the year that you want to get on top of your finances, and you want some empathy, non-judgement, support, accountability to do that, please get in touch. Email us at hello[at]squanderlustpod.com. And you can find out more about how I might be able to help you with some coaching.

If you're resolution is to do more reading this year, please check out our Bookshop.org store. It's via Squanderlustpod.com. There's a whole bunch of information on there. So there's books by all of the authors that we have interviewed over the last year and spoken to, there are ways to support the show.

And, seriously, since this is what the sound quality is like without Wardour. Please buy us a coffee. It really helps us to keep making the high quality edited episodes, it really makes a difference.

Okay, and finally, just a thank you. Thank you to everybody who listens, as I said, who's shared, who's reviewed, who's got in touch, who said "hi" on social media. We love hearing from you. We love your suggestions, reviews. If you have a topic you'd like us to talk about, please tell us. If you had a favourite topic from 2021, tell us that. We want to hear your stories, particularly if we've been able to help you in any way through this show. That would just be wonderful for us to hear. We are @Squanderlustpod on Twitter, on Instagram, on Facebook. So please just drop us a line say "hi". And, whatever happens, just have a great 2022. We wish you health and prosperity and just generally all of the best in the coming year.
